Hey, designer friend 👋

If you read my last email, you probably know my story and how I started in app design. What I didn’t tell yet is how mobile design helped me double my prices, land my biggest clients, and gave me new opportunities I didn’t have with web design before.

Let me share my point of view.

I started as a website designer 6 years ago, and to this day, I worked on over 120 web projects and 25 different apps. And there’s one thing I can tell you for sure - mobile is much more challenging and, at the same time, much more rewarding than web design.

Is app design better, though?

Don’t get me wrong, website design is amazing, and you can make a super comfortable living just by designing cool websites for businesses, but there’s one important question I need to ask you.

Why would you stop there?

There’s a world of opportunity waiting for you to be discovered with mobile design; you just don’t know it yet. Like I didn’t, 2.5 years ago. And now, my life’s changed, and mobile design, my friend, was the breakthrough I needed.

When I first created my tennis app, I was literally in love with the idea of being able to create an app using just my laptop and my imagination. If you stop to think about it - it really is amazing. You get to research, plan, and design an app that you can then prototype and hand off to the development team to develop. An app you can show off to your friends and family and say - “Look, I designed that! and now, 2 million users are using it and enjoying my work.” This is what happened to me. I was ecstatic!

And I was just a simple web designer not so long ago, having $3-6k months one month to making zero the next one. Web design wasn’t enough. It’s only when I found my newborn passion for mobile design I was able to skyrocket my revenue to $10-15k+, and to be honest, it wasn’t much more work than doing just websites.

Is it worth it to start fresh as a UI/UX designer?

Here’s the thing. There’s a huge overlap between the mobile app and website design. Almost the same design practices apply to both. You just really need to understand the basic principles of designing for a certain system. Additionally, you get to understand more about the UX to design a highly-converting app, which could come in handy when designing your future websites. Besides, you are more versatile and flexible with your choice of freelance projects.

It’s a win-win situation.

Your skillset expands greatly, and you’re much more valuable to agencies and hiring agents. Not to mention that your pool of freelance clients potentially doubles. And it really isn’t that hard to get going.

You just need a solid foundation, a plan, and a simple framework to follow. Your clients will recognize good work and find you, and you won’t ever need to worry about searching for that new client because your bills are piling up and your rent is long overdue.

App design really is amazing.

And while it won’t and shouldn’t replace website design entirely, it is great to know and understand it. Otherwise, you’re leaving a lot of opportunities on the table, and you will never get to know its full potential.

Don’t make my mistake and ignore this branch of the industry; get creative, explore different options, and learn new things. You will grow as a creative.

We are blessed to work as designers because our possibilities in this niche are almost endless, and we’re free to work on our skillset without limits. Want to become a web designer? Learn website design. Want to become a mobile designer? Learn mobile design.

I don’t want to sell you the idea of being a UI/UX designer (if you aren’t already), but I just wanted to share my two cents and help you decide if you want to take this next step.

Don’t think you need to be focused on one thing only. Get creative, and learn new stuff. Don’t stop at web design, brand design, or graphic design. Try something different.

Maybe UI/UX is exactly what you need; you just don’t know it yet.
